Bunk beds are typically used in small spaces and are especially popular in children’s bedrooms, thanks to the wide range of options they offer in terms of space. That said, it’s important to know the types of bunk beds available in order to be able to choose the most suitable option for our space and intended use.
The classic spaces where bunk beds have always been found include youth hostels, boats, boarding schools, prisons, etc. However, it’s now become common to see bunk beds in children’s rooms as a solution to be able to accommodate everyone. They have taken on life as a useful, decorative element that can equip a small home without sacrificing comfort.
General features
There are currently different types of bunk beds on the market, which are typically used in children’s bedrooms:
- Traditional bunk beds: two identical beds situated one just above the other. It is the most classic style and the one that has been used for decades. However, nowadays we find multiple versions of this classic model, such as a lower bed that hides a third bed.
- L-shaped bunks: one bed is in line with one of the walls, while the other is placed perpendicular to the one below. This is a more modern way to take advantage of the space below and include cabinets, drawers or a study table
- Sleeping berth bunk beds: beds are in line, but displaced. More space is needed to install this type of bunk beds, especially if it is for children’s bedroom.
- Folding bunks: one bed is fitted on top of the other, but both are enclosed inside a piece of furniture fixed to the wall.

Bunks are also easy-to-clean spaces since there is less surface area being used and they can be swept or scrubbed more quickly and efficiently. In addition, being slightly higher from the ground than normal beds, they make it easier to clean, sweep and mop underneath the bed itself.
